Subject:

B. J. Youngblood letter to D. L. Farrar dated October 12, 1983.

Dear Mr. Youngblood:

Enclosed is a copy of the U.S. Department of Interior form (FHR-8-300), " National Register of Historic Placea Inventory - Fomination Form", which has been completed in light of the information that is presently available concerning archeological site 11 Ka 179.

[

Sinca it is apparent that sufficient data is not available to i

make a determination of eligibility, Commonwealth Edison has made arrangements with the Illinois State Museum Society to conduct additional field investigations during the 1984 spring field work season. Upon completion of these investigations the information obtained should be adequate to make a firm decision as to the eligibility of site llKal?9.

In the meantime, the site has not been disturbed by construction of any Commonwealth Edison facilities and to the best of our knowledge no other activity has occurred or is planned that will impact on the site.

Your office will be informed as soon as the further investigations ara completed.

If there are any further questions regarding this matter please contact C. L. McDonough at (312)294-4431.

l Sincerely, f n/ 2 f i

_2L_ unexposed C caribe the present and original (if known) physical appearance 11Ka179, a prehistoric archaeological site, was located in a fallow field and pasture on a level area of the northern bluff of the Kankakee River. The surface of the fallow field had a variety of prehistoric artifacts on it.

No artifacts were visible on the surface of the pasture. However, shovel probing located a rich concentration of artifacts and organic remains beneath the surface.

Cpacific dates Builder' Architect Ctrt; ment of Significance (in one paragraph)

The significance of this site has not yet been determined.

It was described as potentially eligible in the 1981 report of investigations of the transmission line corridor. This determination is based on the discovery of well preserved prehistoric artifacts and organic remains discovered while inspecting the site surface and ex-cavating a luaited number of shovel-test holes to evaluate the site in the pasture.

A pit feature was discovered by shovel testing. This pit yielded well-preserved organic remains including both flora and fauna.

Ceramic sherds from the site are classified as Late Mississippian in age, AD 1,000 to AD 1,380.

It is possible that the pasture area of the site has never been plowed and that extensive well-preserved remains of a Mississippian village are preserved.
