Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1)

Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Seismic Capability of Incore Thermocouples Display At the request of Mr. J. Vcn Vliet on November 10, 1983 GPUN has reviewed the seismic capability of the Incore thermocouple display system.

The two primary areas of focus as discussed in our letter of February 2, 1982 (5211-82-007) are:

a.

The cable and connector between seal plate and seismic cable tray in the Reactor Building, b.

The digital display meter in the Control Room.

GPUN has now performed an analysis of the cable and connector between the seal plate and the cable tray and determined that it is capable of operation following an SSE.

Further, GPUN has been unsuccessful in finding a vendor who will market seis-mically qualified digital meters. Therefore, GPUN has embarked on its own program to qualify the digital meter seismically. Until this program is complete, GPUN will provide an alternate means to obtain backup incore thermocouple readings in the Control Room. The alternative will consist of a portable measuring instrument (Voltmeter) which together with a conversion table allow a control room operator to convert voltages to temperature.

Based on the above resolutions, GPUN now considers the incore thermocouple system combined with this alternate method described above capable of providing incore thermocouple readings following a seismic event.
