Gentlemen:

On August 13, 1985, TV Electric orally notified the NRC of a deficiency involving non-seisinic to seismic interaction effects in the design of architectural features. As ludicated in reference 1, Dsne Specific Action Plan (ISAP) II.d of the Comanche Peak Response Team (CPai: Program Plan addressed technical icsues and allegations transmitted i; TV Electric by the NRC concerning non-seismically designed ceiling elements installed in the control room. As part of their findings, the NRC's letter (Reference 2) required TU Electric to provide the results of an analysis which demonstrates tl:at structural f ailures of other Category 11 and non-seismic structures, systems and components are reviewed for the effect of failure on safety 1 related structures, systems and components. In Reference 3, TV Electric indicated that the corrective action for Unit 2 will be assessed after the resumption of Unit 2 engineeritig activities. This letter provides the Unit 2 corrective actions for this deficiency.

IXX 91283 a Page 2 of 2 br.citilegt ut4Lff eturCl Certain existing architectural features do not require further Unit 2 actions since the Unit 1 evaluations corrected or enveloped Unit 2. These include: I doors, sheet rock walls, acoustical blants (control room ceiling), and l fiberglass overlay sheets icontrol room). 1 l

The existing design of gratings, checkered plates, ladders, handrails and anchorages of miscellaneous structural items are being evaluated for seismic adequacy, Where required, design modifications will be implemented prior to Unit 2 fuel load.

Reference 4 discussed the methodology to be utilized for the physical validation of new and modified Seismic Category 11 installations. The same methodology is being used for the physical validation of existing Seismic Category 11 installations as prescribed by engineering for the commodities listed above.

The remaining architectural features such as lighting, speakers, horns, smoke detectors, and miscellaneous architectural elements such as flushings/ trims will be addressed in a future letter describing the corrective actions fee 50AR CP 86 045 " Seismic Category !! Systems and Components".

b) The design of Class 5 piping and supports have been addressed in SDAR CP 87-62 " Class 5 Piping" (see Reference 6),

c) Train C junctica boxes will be addressed in a future letter describing the corrective actions for SDAR-CP-86-045 " Seismic Category !! bystems and Components".
