MISSISSIPPI POWER & LIGHT COMPANY Helping Build Mississippi P. O. B OX 1640 J AC K S O N, MIS SIS SIP PI 3 9 2 0 5 December 19, 1983 NUCLEAR PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Washington, D. C.

20555 Attention:

Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director

Dear Mr. Denton:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416 and 50-417 License No. NPF-13 File: 0260/765 Response to GGNS-2 Staffing Survey AECM-83/0803 Mississippi Power & Light Company (MP&L) is providing this letter in response to an infornal survey being conducted by the NRC Staff pertaining to the profile of the plant staff. The survey requests infornation about Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (GGNS-2).

Since GGNS-2 is under construction and no licensing action is expected to occur for several years, MP&L's position is that estimates pertaining to staffing provided at this time would not be meaningful. MP&L's position was discussed with the GGNS NRC Project Manager on December 16, 1983.

The NRC Staf f has indicated a similar survey for GGNS Unit I will be formally issued to MP&L in the near future. Information pertaining to the organization, staffing levels, and experience associated with the operation of Grand Gulf Unit I was provided to you in the MP&L letter, AECM-83/0680, dated October 26, 1983. This information was also discussed with the NRC Staff in a meeting held on October 28, 1983. As discussed with the NRC Project Manager on December 16, 1983, MP&L is prepared to provide additional information on staffing levels and experience for GGNS-1, if required. Please contact this office if further information is desired.

Yours truly,

. Dale Manager of Nuclear Services MLC/JGC:rg cc:
