Director, Nuclear Engineering Laboratory Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM 87131 RE: DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

Dear Bob:

This is to follow up on our conversation regarding the preparedness of the University of New Mexico Hospitals to handle one or more accident victims who are potentially contaminated with radioactive materials.

We are prepared and can handle whatever comes in the door.

In the past five years we have had two disaster drills involving simulated radioactively contaminated patients. The first accident scenario included a school bus containing 32 children which collided with a truck carrying materials from a nuclear pharmacy. The second involved two victims who were contaminated in a similar traffic accident. We also conduct joint exercises with the Air Force involving simulated plane crashes with radioactively contaminated patients through the VA Hospital.

Our department is in the forefront of radiation emergency l preparedness. Dr. Mettler and I have recently authored a reference book with Robert Ricks of REAC/TS on the subject.

The system to properly care for radiation accident victims is in place, has been tested and works at the University of New Mexico Hospital. If you or any of your visitors have any questions regarding our program I will be happy to discuss them with you. l sincero y,
