l Use of ASME Code Case N-481 i
Gentlemen:
The purpose of tnis letter is to inform the NRC of our intent to invoke ASME Code Case N-481, " Alternative Examination Requirements for Cast Austenitic Pump Casings," at Waterford 3. This code case provides alternative examinations which may be performed in lieu of the volumetric examinations specified in Table IWB-2500-1, Examination Category B-L-1, Item B12.10.
The NRC approved ASME Code Case N-481 in Revision 9 of Regulatory Guide 1.147, " Inservice Inspection Code Case Acceptability ASME l
Section XI Division 1," dated April 1992.
Code Case N-481 requires that an evaluation be performed to demonstrate the safety and serviceability of the pump casing and that a report of this evaluation be submitted to the regulatory and enforcement authorities having jurisdiction at the plant site for review. This evaluation has been documented in Combustion Engineering Owners Group Topical Report CEN-412,
" Relaxation of Reactor Coolant Pump Casing Inspection Requirements,"
including CEN-412 Supplement 1, " Relaxation of Reactor Coolant Pump Casing Inspection Requirements at Waterford Unit 3."
The NRC's decision to not review or issue a safety evaluation for CEN-412 was communicated to the Combustion Engineering Owner's Group in a letter from Mr. James E. Richard of NRR dated November 4, 1992. The letter recommends that the licensee should simply inform the NRC of the intent to invoke the code case and 9505050297 950502 h
