Dear Dr. Murley:
On September 3,1991, members of the Commonwealth Edison Company's and Nuclear Regulatory Commission's staffs conducted a teleconference to discuss the referenced lotter requesting an exemption of the Foodwater chock valvos from the 10 CFR 50 Appendix J test program. The purpose of this lotter is to provklo a response to a question from NRR with respect to the request for exemption. In the request, CECO committed to perform Ty se C tests on 1 he inboard and outboard check valves until the outboard feedwater lping (up to ' he feedwater heaters) was upgraded to meet selsmic and safety related pl Ing requlrcments.
Attor the piping is upgradod, Type C tests would be discontinued, and t io valvos would be included in the in-Sorvice Testlng Program, with a requiroment for a water leakage test on the valves.
During the September 3,1991 teleconference, the NRR staff requested a schedule for the completion of the upgrade of the feodwater piping. CECO willinitiato engineering activitles to support the completion of the piping upgrado during the Quad Citios Unit 1 and Unit 2 twelfth refuel outages (01 R12 and O2R12) scheduled to begin on September,1991 and March 1992 respectively. CECO will koop the Project Manager aware of the status of the piping upgrado activities, and promptly notify the ProJoct Manager of any potential scheduto chaages including revisions to the associated refuel outage schedules.
