Core Reload Methodology l
This letter transmits GPU Nuclear Topical Report TR-087, Revision 0, "TMI-l Core Thermal-Hydraulic Methodology Using The VIPRE-01 Computer Code," for NRC l
review and approval for use in THI-1 core reload evaluations.
This report presents the methods for performing steady-state and transient thermal-hydraulic analyses of the nuclear reactor core for normal operating conditions and several accident conditions.
The VIPRE-01 code has been reviewed by the NRC and found acceptable for referencing in licensing applications as documented in NRC letter from A. C. Thadani to Y. Y. Yung, dated October 30, 1993.
The methodology and adequacy of the model for licensing applications has been demonstrated by comparison of representative analytical results to both vendor calculations and test data. The overall good agreement in these comparisons and the conservative response for licensing applications demonstrates GPU Nuclear's ability to perform core thermal-hydraulic operational and licensing analysis of TMI-l using VIPRE-01.
GPU Nuclear is planning to utilize in-house core reload design methods for the THI-l Cycle 12 core design. Cycle 12 core design activities are scheduled to commence April 1996 to support the Cycle 12 startup in October 1997.
One (1) remaining Topical Report, " Reload Design and Setpoint Methodology", will be submitted in June 1995 with supporting demonstration analysis to be submitted in August 1995.
This remaining Topical Report will utilize the methods presented in the three submitted Topical Reports (TR-087, TR-078, and TR-091).
Note that the NRC methods qualification review on the three methods Topicals could proceed independently of the fourth Topical Report. GPU Nuclear is prepared to respond to any NRC review questions and to fully support the review process as necessary.
