. Summary of Environmental Protection Program Respecting Construction of Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (CGNS) for Six Months Ending October 31, 1983 Construction Highlights Construction of Unit 2 is 33.2% complete with work limited to engineering'and construction, primarily for the purpose of protecting the, investment.
During the reporting period, construction emphasis was placed on the following areas:
o In the Auxiliary Building, piping, conduit installation and concrete placement continued.
In the Turbine Building,-concrete placement continued, along o
with installation of cable tray drains.
o-In the Containment Building, piping and steel were installed.
o In the Control. Building, installation of cable trays and conduit was continued and refurbished panels were placed.
Work'at the Energy Services Center (ESC) was continued.
Vehicular Movement No."off limit" violations were observed during the reporting period.
Dust Control No dust control violations were observed during the reporting period.
Smoke Control During the reporting period th'ere were 11' smoke control violations caused-by excessive emissions from the burn pit.
The monitoring frequency of the burn 1 pit has been increased as a _ result of these violations.1 Erosion Control Rainfall was recorded on 33 separate occasions during the reporting period, with an accumulated rainfall of 30.86-inches. Runoff samples'were collected on 7 of these instances and returned to the Environmental Surveillance Laboratory for suspended' solids analysis. Runoff was_ evident on three additional occasions, but no L
samples were taken'because they occurred on a weekend or holiday.

Chemical and Solid Waste Control ~
No chemical or solid waste contrcl problems were encountered during-the reporting period.. A contracc with Chemical Waste Management, Inc., has been finalized to provide the disposal of chemical and hazardous waste generated at GGNS.
Regional Groundwater Dewatering The 12 regional groundwater wells and 15 perched aquifer wells were read during the reporting period.
Several significant changes were observed in the regional groundwater readings during the reporting period, but none of the changes were permanent.
The perched aquifer wells were read monthly during the. reporting I
period. The casing for'MW-7 was shortened and the new elevation is l-140.03 ft._above Mean Sea Level (MSL). Well DW-8 continued to read l
slightly above the design maximum groundwater level of 109.00 MSL through July. Questions concerning the operability of the Unit I dewatering wells have been forwarded to Nuclear Plant Engineering for an evaluation.-
Vegetation Some minor tree damage caused by tornadic winds occurred in May.
Otherwise, no vegetation abnormalities were observed during the reporting period.
Transmission Lines No transmission lines surveys were conducted during the reporting period.
Sediment Basins A & B No problems were encountered with either basin during the reporting period. During May and most of June the backwater from Mississippi River flooding completely covered the dam and spillway in Basin "A".
_There is a notable accumulation of sediment at the influent to both basins.
