Subject:

Inservice Inspection Program for Braidwood Unit 1 and Unit 2 NRC Docket Numbers 50-456 and 50-457

Reference:

R. Capra letter to D. Farrt,_ dated March 14, 1995, transmitting Nuclear Regu]'. tory Commission ]

Approval for Byron Statior. Inservice Inspection l Plan for Pressure Testing helief Request Attached for your review is Revision 3 to the Inservice  !

Inspection Program for Braidwood Units 1 and 2. This submittal j contains three new relief requarts: NR-20 (No Ultrasonic '

Inspections of the Unit 1 Ster.m Generator Nozzles Inner Radius ,

Sections), NR-21 (Alternative Requirements for Repair / Replacement l Hydros on Class 1, 2 and 3 systems) and NR-22 (Alternative i Requirements for Class 3 Ten Year Hydrostatic Tests).  ;

I The Reference letter transmitted Nuclear Regulatory Commission I approval of relief request HR-1 and HR-2 for Byron Station Units 1 and 2. These relief requests are identical to NR-21 and NR-22, J which are described in the Attachment.

Regarding NR-20, Braidwood Station believes that approval of this  !

request is justified because the Unit 1 steam generators are i currently scheduled for replacement in 1998. Performing the volumetric examination on the inner radius section of the subject nozzles will subject plant personnel to high radiation exposure.

The total radiation exposure to personnel is estimated to be at least eight person-rem. The inner radius section of the nozzles will be subject to the applicable requirements of ASME Section XI for the second ten-year inspection interval.

Braidwood Station would like to implement relief requests NR-20, NR-21 and NR-22 during the upcoming refuelinC outage; therefore, requests approval by September 1, 1995.
