FINAL REPORT OF SIGNIFICANT CONSTRUCTION DEFICIENCY NO. 79
" UNQUALIFIED COMPONENTS IN HYDROGEN ANALYZERS" l
INTRODUCTION This report is submitted pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e). It describes a deficiency that existed with the unqualified hydrogen analyzec sample pumps and motors that were in instrument cabinets #C-48A & C-48B.
To the best of our knowledge this deficiency has not been reported to the USNRC pursuant to 10CFR21.
DESCRIPTION Comment #19 of the NRC audit report on the Environmental Qualification Program of Waterford #3 (dated 1-5-83) identified a potential problem with the hydrogen analyzer cump bearing failures after long-term operation. Evaluation 4
by Ebasco Engineering also identified that the pump motors were not Class 1E qualified.
SAFETY IMPLICATIONS If lef t uncorrected, failure of the pump motors and/or pump bearings would not allow analysis of the containment atmosphere for hydrogen after a LOCA, using the hydrogen analyzer system. The hydrogen' analyzer package is ' classified as Class 1E in Section 6.2.5.2.1 of the FSAR.
I-CORRECTIVE ACTION TAKEN Communications with'the vendor indicate that qualified pumps use high' temperature bearings identified by the green color of the grease.
A field inspection determined that the pump bearings contained green grease and, therefore, the pumps were qualified for the LOCA environment as indicated.
by the existing documentation.
I Replacement motors,-meeting the requirements of NUREG-0588, have been installed. 'NCR-W3-5600,-initiated to track and document this def, iciency, is closed.
'This report is submitted as the Final Report.
