Dear Mr. Asselstine:

\\w Recentihl met with Mr. and Mrs. Norman Aamodt of Coatesville, Pennsylvania conchning the Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear generating plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. As you probably know, Mr. and Mrs. Aamodt have btsn active'intervenors in oroceedings before the NRC regarding the 1979 accident at TMI.'Their concerns are primarily, focused on management issues 'Which may have been the caussi factor. I wasi, impressed with the Aamaats as involved citizens whose only interest is that the NRC adequately and fairly hear their arguements, objectively investigate reasonable allegat\\,4s, and render decisions on the TMI matter which give highest prioqitytto the'public health, welfare, and safety.

I am greatly concerned by the serious nature of some of the Aamojt.'s claims. These include the NRC'c handling of'the so-called "Hartnan matter", the testing and licensing of nuclear'piant operators, regulations which, I am told, allow operators to work excessively long periods without

break,Dnd property in areas surrounding TMI, and the failure of the NRC to the adequacy of the newly developed emergency plan for protection of peopD adequate 1? investigate allegations of alarming rates of leukemia in communities surrounding the plant.

I am far from qualified to make a juhement as to the validity of the Aamodt's allegations; such decisions are; hare appropriately dealt with by the NRC decision making process. Nevertheless, I will watch the NRC's examination of the issues raised by the Aamodts and others regarding TMI in

_particular, and nuclear power g'eneration in general. All suggestions of error by anytand ail parties involved in the TMI incident should be carefully examined. One of those parties Q, of course, the NRC. I would appreciate.beingsadvised,of NRC progress in these matters.

. gg The Aamodts piso' indicated that they have been experiencing considerable difficulty in gaining acess to certain documents relating to the TMI matteri Sir 2e the TMI case and its handling by the NRC is of considerable importance both to Pennsylvania and the entire nation, I trust 8311180205 831110 DR ADOCK 05000 960
