LaSalle County Station Radwaste Tank Rooms

Reference:

(a) C.E. Norelius letter to Cordell Reed dC.ed June 28,1990; transmitt!ng Inspection Report 50 373/90013 and 50-374/90014.

(b) Management Meeting on May 30,1990 between CECO and USNRC (Region Ill) to discuss the radiological status of LaSalle's Radwaste Tank rooms.

The purpose of this letter is to c!arify Commonwealth Edison's (CECO) commitment to replace instrumentation associated with LaSalle's Radwaste Tank .

and to update the status of the decontamination of LaSalle's Radwaste Tank rooms.

These commitments were stated within the Reference (a) Inspection Report and the Reference (b) Management Meeting which included discussions concerning the overall status and condition of LaSalle County Station's Radwaste Tank rooms. Discussion was focused on the significant quantities of radioactive sludge and resins then resident on the floors of LaSalle 's six (6) Radwaste Tank rooms and CECO's plans to reduce the likelihood of future tank overflows leading to excessive contamination. The six rooms that were the basis of discussion are listed as follows: 1) Unit 1 Floor Drain Tanks; 2) Unit 2 Flour Drain Tanks; 3) Unit 1/ Unit 2 Discharge Tanks; 4) Unit 1/ Unit 2 Collector Tanks; 5) Unit 1 Chemical Waste Tank; and 6) Waste Studge/URC Sludge Tank.

As of July 3,1991, significant decontamination work has been performed on three of the subject rooms. Contamination levels have been reduced to acceptable

- levels. The remaining three rooms are scheduled for completion by December 31, 1991. Further decontamination is planned for the URC Studge Tank and Waste Sludge Tank room depending on source term at the time of installaticn of updated tank level Instrumentation.

To reduce the likelihood of future tank overflows, LaSalle Station plans to instali new levelinstrumentation in the URC Sludge Tank and the Waste Sludge Tank.

The improved instrumentation includes both sludge level and water level indicators and is tertatively schsduled for installation by December 31,1991 CECO's proposed schedule is contingent upon parts availability and ALARA cencerns. It is expected that the new design will eliminate avoidable spills within the Waste Sludge /URC Sludge Tank room. The level Instrumentation on the other Radwaste Tanks at LaSalle Station Ag jf.

are functioning properly and are not in need of repair or replacement. f I
