(a)
Letter to Mr. A. E. Lundvall, Jr., from Mr. R. A. Clark dated March 12,1982 (b)
Letter to Mr. R. A. Clark, from Mr. A. E. Lundvall,Jr., dated July 22,1982 Gentlemen:
Reference (a) requested. Baltimore Gas and Electric Company to provide additional information concerning the Inservice Inspection (ISI) program for Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Unit Nos. I and 2. Reference (b) forwarded this information and expressed our interest in changing the Unit 1 inspection interval end date to insure updating of both 151 programs to the same year and addenda of ASME Code Section XI.
To achieve this we proposed to extend the first Unit 1 inspection interval to April 1, 1987, to coincide with Unit 2. Subsequent discussions with Mr. D. H. Jaffe, NRC Project Manager indicated that the extention would be acceptable.. Therefore, it is requested that the exemption be granted as provided by 10 CFR 50.55a(g).
Presently, intervals wrii conclude May 8, 1985, for Calvert Cliffs tinit I and April 1,1987, for Unit 2. Title 10 CFR 50.55a requires updating to the approved fear and addenda of the Code that was referenced 12 months prior to the beginning >f the next interval.
With the current' intervals, the units will be required to update to different years and addenda of ASME Code Section XI. In an effort to prevent procedure duplication and confusion of Code requirements between Calvert Cliffs Units 1 and 2,it is preferreo that we update both units to the same year and addenda of the Code.

6 Mr. James R. Miller March 6,1984 Page 2 To insure updating, of both ISI programs to the same edition of the code we propose to extend the Unit I first interval end date to April 1,1987. This will extend the first interval by one refueling outage as shown below.
PREDICTED REFUELING OUTAGES UNIT 1 UNIT 2 Fall 1983.
Spring 1984 Spring 1985*
Fall 1985 Fall 1986 Spring 1987
- Last outage in inspection interval.
o Proposed last outage in inspection intervalif Unit I updates April 1987 The Code presently allows an extension of the 10-year interval by 12 months.
In changing the Unit 1 interval to April 1,1987, the final outage will occur approximately 17 months beyond the original interval end date, five months more than ASME Code Section XI permits without exemption. The sum of refueling outage durations exceeds the five-month extention that would be realized.
The Inservice Inspection surveillance will continue during the additional refueling outage in the first interval. The Class 2 examinations will be added to the existing 10-year program because Unit I was not updated to the Summer 1975 addenda until the second 40-month period.
We have determined that this request constitutes a Class 111 amendment pursuant to 10 CFR 170.22, and accordingly, Baltimore Gas and Electric Check No. B391209 in the amount of $4,000 is remitted herewith.
Should you have further questions regarding this matter, do not hesitate to contact us.
Very truly yours,
