Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Linear Iadications in Seam of ASTM A500 GR B Tube Steel (#113)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On January 23, 1984, Detroit Edison's Mr. R. McHechan, Quality Engineer - Construction Quality Assurance telephoned Mr. J. E. Konklin of NRC Region III to report on linear indications in se'am of ASTM A500 GR B tube steel at the Fermi 2 site.

Linear indications had been discovered in ASTM A500 GR B tube steel (2" x 2" x 1/4") of Heat No. All714 as supplied by U. S. Steel. The indications were detected during a support fabrication inspection by Project Quality Assurance (PQA) personnel. Similar indications were found in approximately sixty (60) linear feet out of two hundred (200) of the material ordered.

The subject material was purchased for use in the fabrication and erection of electrical cable tray supporte. This material w1a received last October. Investigation by Detroit Edison revealed approximately thirty-seven (37) supports fabricated or erected subsequent to receipt of the material.

In an interim disposition of the nonconformancu report identifying this condition, field engineering has requested visual inspectica of the identified supports by PQA. Further evaluation of the subject
