As you know from previous discussions and correspondence, AECL Technologies Inc. and it's parent company AECL have been involved in a major review of the CANDU product line. This review has taken on increased importance and urgency due to recent developments in sales of CANDU reactors in the international market.

As result, all of AECL's programs including the U.S. CANDU licensing effort have been reassessed in light of available resources.

In an action taken by the AECL Board of Directors based on a recommendation by the AECL Executive, it was determined that the U.S. CANDU-3 licensing program currently undenvay with the Commission be placed on an indefinite hold status.

Accordingly we request that all work on the AECL Technologies Inc. CANDU-3 license application be discontinued and no further charges be made by NRC or it's subcontractors.

We at AECL deeply regret having to take this action, however the anticipated high cost of the NRC review, and the lack of any near term market in the U.S. requires that we direct our resources to more immediate prospects. It is my hope that we can renew our program with the NRC at some time in the future when we have established designs compatible with market needs. We request that the docket for this project remain open.

I have recently been appointed Acting President for AECL Technologies Inc.
