Palladino Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Ccmmission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Chairman:

It has recently come to the attention of this Subcommittee that an NRC investigation team examining issues at the Materford III nuclear plant conducted a series of interviews with various parties in June, 1983.

As part of the Subcommittee's ongoing interest in NRC investigatory practices, I am requesting information about the circumstances of these interviews.

On Tuesday, June 28, 1983, a four-member investigation team headed by Mark Peranich of the Office of Inspection and Enforcement, conducted an interview with the editor and a reporter from Gambit, l

a publication based in New Orleans.

The interview apparently l

concerned quality assurance problems at the Waterford plant.

I would appreciate your responses to the following:

1) Does NRC have a written or other established policy concerning interviewing members of the news media on investigatory matters?
2) What was tne reason for interviewing the editor and reporter from Gambit?
3) Did NRC of ficials ask either the reporter or the' editor for the identity of sources used in writing stories on the Waterford plant?
4) What information was obtained as a result of the interview?

5)What other parties have. been inter-viewed to date in connection with this particular inquiry?

6) Has the NRC requested additional meetings with either the reporter or the editor and, if so, for what purpose?

Additionally, I would appreciate it if youc. could supply me with l

a status report of this inquiry.

Your prompt response will be I

appreciated.

Sincerely, 8310060594 830908 PDR COMMS NRCC EDWARD J. MA E:Y, Chairman CORRESPONDENCE PDR Subcommittee n Oversight
