Gentlemen:

This letter is being forwarded as requested by Reference (a). It is our understanding that you require additional information relating to the recent failures of the CEA Reed Switch Position Indicators at Calvert Cliffs. The following addresses the specific j questions forwarded in Reference (a). '

l. Provide a description of your understanding of the problems with the Reed Switch Stacks.

The failure modes of the Unit 1 Reed Switch Position Indicators have been determined by the NSSS (eSupp) These failures modes were lier.

2. Describe your corrective actions taken to address this problem to date.

The corrective actions taken to date on Unit I are described in references (b) through (e).

3. Provide a commitment and description of future actions planned to address the problems.

References (b) through (e) described the actions taken during the last refueling outage for Unit 1, which occurred in late 1983. During the upcoming Unit 2 refueling scheduled to begin in April 1984, the same actions are planned for Unit 2 , (i.e., the failed Reed Switch Stack Position Tramsmitters will be removed and sent to the vendor for inspection and repair.) The above actions will be completed as soon as time and parts availability permit. l In summary, if the requested change to the Technical Specifications on CEA position indication is processed, we will continue to aggressively pursue resolution of the problems with the CEA Reed Swit:n Stacks.
