APPLICANTS' SECOND REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL EXTENSION OF TIME TO ANSWER INTERVENORS' MOTION FOR

SUMMARY

DISPOSITION OF CONTENTION NUMBER 1 On May 25, 1983, Applicants requested that the time within which to answer Intervenors' Motion for Summary Disposition of Contention 1 be ex'. ended to September 30, 1983. The reason for this request was ths.t Applicants' were considering various

(

alternatives, ine'uding the possible termination of the Skagit/Hanford Nuclear Project (S/HNP), which would render Intervenors' Motion moot.

l On June 2, 1983, the Board granted Applicants' rt. quest and extended time within which to answer Intervenors' Motion to September 30, 1983.

! On August 30, 1983, Applicants advised the Board (letter i' from John W. Ellis, President of Puget Sound Power & Light l

!!!A 288u O!8?a!"2 PDR O

'i) D]

o Company, to Messrs. Denton, Wolf and Lewis) that on August 29, the Puget Power Board of Directors had directed management to take all steps necessary to terminate S/HNP, including seeking approval of the proposed termination from the other three owners of the project, Portland General Electric Company, Pacific Power & Light Company, and The Washington Water Power Company. Puget Power is proceeding in accordance with this direction.

On September 13, 1983, Applicants requested that the time within which to answer Intervenors' Motion be extended to l

October 14, 1983, for the reason that, although The Washington Water Power Company had by then concurred with the decision to terminate, the other two owners were not expected to act on this matter until mid-October. Sofaras known to Applicants, the Licensing Board has not yet acted on this request, which is l

just as well under the circumstances.

The current situation is that Pacific Power & Light Company has now acted on the matter and has concurred with the decision to terminate. The remaining owner, Portland General Electric Company, still has the matter under consideration but expects i

to reach a decision by year-end.

l l

l In view of the foregoing circumstances, Applicants hereby request that the deadline for answerin'g Intervenors' Motion be extended to January 15, 1984. Applicants trust that this further extension will not burden any party and that it will l

t

4 provide sufficient time so that we will not find it necessary to trouble the Board with any further extension request.

DATED: September 28, 1983.

Respectfully submitted, PERKINS, COIE, STONE, OLSEN & W IAMS By '
