Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 - OIE BULLETIN 83 CHEC" VALVE FAILURES IN RAW WATER COOLING SYSTEMS OF DIESEL GENERATORS The following information responds to item 5 of R. C. DeYoung's letter dated March 10, 1983 concerning OIE Bulletin 83-03 Our previous response for items 1, 2, 3, and 4 were submitted by my letter dated Jure 7,1983 Sequoyah has completed inspection of all ERCW check valves in the dies-I generator cooling water flow path. Resuli.,s of this inspection have been summarized by brea' ring down the inspection into two parts, supply side and discharge side.

Inspections were performed by removing the flanged valve (s) from the line and vis:: ally inspacting the valves through the inlet and discharge sides.

Internals cf the check valves on the ERCW supply side of the diesel generators were inspected per surveillance instruction (SI) 166.37 between September 24, 1983 and September 26, 1983 All valves were found to be in acceptable condition; and, as addressed specifically in the referenced bulletin, all discs were in.:pected and found intact. This inspection also included a mar.;al stroke check which was performed successfully on each val'IO.

Internals of the dieck valves on the ERCW discharge side of tt,e diesel generators were inspected per SI-166.38 between September 27, 1983 and October 1, 1983 Except as noted below, all valve internals and manual strokes were found acceptable.

Two check valves (1-CV-67-512A and 1-CV-67-517B) were f ound stuck full open. Once freed, unimpaired full stroke capability was verified, and further inspection revealed no indication of valve internala damage or impairment. One check valve (1-CV-67-512B) was found with foreign materia' buildup which might have impaired full valve closure. This scale material was removed and full closure capability restcred. No damage to disks cr seats was found in any of the 16 discharge and suction valves inspected.

No fbrther maintenance was required.

If you have any questione, please get in touch with K. P. Parr at FTS 858-2688.
