South Texas Project Units 1 & 2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Response to IE Bulletin 83-05 Bulletin 83-05, "ASME Nuclear Code Pumps and Spare Parts Manufactured by the Hayward Tyler Pump Company," has been reviewed by Houston Lighting &

Power Company (HL&P). The requirements of the Bulletin have been addressed, and the appropriate actions are being implemented. Those actions being implemented in response to the Bulletin are described in the enclosed attachment.

. b- Attachment ST-HL-AE-985 Page 1 of 2 South Texas Project Units 1 & 2 Response to IE Bulletin 83-05 Item 1 a) Houston Lighting & Power Company (HL&P) has reviewed all ASME Code pumps manufactured by the Hayward Tyler Pump Company (HTPC). A list of the affected pumps and their service application follows:

Quantity Service Application 2/ unit Reactor Makeup Water pumps 3/ unit Electrical Auxiliary Building chilled water pumps

  • 3/ unit Essential Cooling Water screen wash booster pumps 3/ unit Component Cooling Water pumps 3/ unit Essential Cooling Water pumps
  • The EAB chilled water system has been redesigned. Therefore, new pumps will be ordered, and the six pumps (3/ unit) above will not be used on the South Texas Project (STP).

b) HL&P plans to develop inservice test requirements for each of the affected HTPC pumps installed at the STP in accordance with ASME Section XI. The pump inservice tests shall be performed as required based upon the IWP Pump Inservice Test Requirements.

c) A performance test shall be performed on each HTPC pump in accordance with the HTPC " Expanded Commission Tests and Inspections" procedure as submitted with the subject Bulletin.

Included shall be a 48-hour endurance test on all pumps in question at desian pump capacity. The following dates are approximate for preoperational performance testing of the pumps:

Essential Cooling Water: 38 weeks prior to fuel load (including screen wash booster pumps)

Component Cooling Water: 21 weeks prior to fuel load Reactor Make-up Water: 38 weeks prior to fuel load d) An ASME code system Hydrostatic Pressure Test shall be performed in accordance with our Quality Control and Construction Site Pro-cedures. Should Hydrostatic pressure testing of a component not be practical, visual inspection shall be performed at maximum operating pressure. All test results will be made available to the NRC at the STP site. The following dates are approximate for hydrostatic testing of the systems:

Essential Cooling Water: 54 weeks prior to fuel load (including screen wash booster pumps)

Component Cooling Water: 46 weeks prior to fuel load Reactor Make-up Water: 54 weeks prior to fuel load
