DPR-42 50-306 DPR-60 Service Water System Operational Perfomiance inspection-Self-Assessment The purpose of this letter is to inform the NRC Staff of Northem States Power Company's intent to conduct a service water system operational performance self-assessment at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant. It is NSP's desire to implement NRC Inspection Procedure IP 40501," Licensee Self-Assessments Related to Area-of-Emphasis inspections." The tentative schedule for commencing the self-assessment is August 14,1995 with the assessment lasting five weeks. NSP requests NRC Staff acceptance of this self-assessment as an attemative to the NRC conducted team inspection in this area.
The scope of the Prairie Island service water self-assessment will include all areas in NRC Temporary Instruction 2515/118, Revision 1, " Service Water System Operational Performance inspection." The self-assessment efforts are conducted under the supervision of the Prairie Island engineering organization with sponsorship by the Vice-President of Nuclear Generation at NSP. The assessment team will consist of contract individuals with self-assessment experience, primarily in NRC Regions I and ll, and significant experience and expertise within the assigned areas of review. NSP is presently preparing the detailed self-assessment plan, including scope and schedule.

A meeting has been set up, tentatively scheduled for March 2,1995, at which time NSP would present the detailed self-assessment plan to the NRC Staff in Region lli to gain acceptance of the plan prior to proceeding. We will be contacting you in the near future to finalize the plans for the presentation.
