APPLICANTS' REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL EXTENSION OF TIME TO ANSWER INTERVENORS' MOTION FOR

SUMMARY

DISPOSITION OF CONTENTION NUMBER 1 On May 25, 1983, Applicants requested that the time within which to answer Intervenors' Motion for Summary Disposition of Contention 1 be extended to September 30, 1983.

The reason for this request was that Applicants' were considering various alternatives, including the possible termination of the Skagit/Hanford Nuclear Project (S/HNP), which would render Intervenors' Motion moot.

On June 2, 1983, the Board granted Applicants' request and extended the time within which to answer Intervenors' Motion to September 30, 1983.

i On August 30, 1983, Applicants advised the Board (letter from John W. Ellis, President of Puget Sound Power & Light Company, to Messrs. Denton, Wolf and Lewis) that on August 29, the Puget Power Board of Directors had directed management to take all steps necessary to terminate S/HNP, including seeking approval of the proposed termination from the other three owners of the project.

Puget Power is procecding in accordance with this direction.

Thus far one of the other three owners, The Washington Water Power Company, has acted on the matter and has concurred with the decision to terminate.

The other owners, Portland General Electric Company and Pacific Power &

Light Company, have not yet acted on the matter.

Puget Power anticipates that the other owners will complete their action on the matter by mid October, but not by September 30, the current deadline for answering Intervenors' Motion.

If the other owners concur with the decision to terminate, Applicants will thereupon file a request to withdraw their application, thereby rendering Intervenors' Motion moot.

In view of the foregoing circumstances, Applicants hereby request that the deadline for answering Intervenors' Motion be extended to October 14, 1983.

Counsel for the NRC Staff, Lee Scott Dewey, has advised the undersigned that the NRC Staff has no objection to this extension. ____
