Nuclear Regulatory Commission 611 Ryan Plaza Drive, Suite 1000 Arlington, Texas 76102

Dear Mr. Collins:

South Texas Project Units 1 & 2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Revised Response to IE Bulletin No. 79-23 By letter dated October 22, 1979, Houston Lighting & Power Company (HL&P) provided a response to NRC IE Bulletin No. 79-23, " Potential Failure of Emergency Diesel Generator Field Exciter Transformer."

Item 2 of the Bulletin requested that HL&P provide a schedule for the completion of a sustained full-load operation test of the emergency diesel generators. The response indicated that the estimated latest dates for completion of the tests were September 1983 for Unit 1, and September 1985 for Unit 2.

However, the schedule for completion of the tests has been changed to reflect the revised completicn date for the Project. As currently planned, sustained full-load operation tests of the STP emergency diesel generators will be completed in September 1986 for Unit 1, and September 1988 for Unit 2 If there are any questions, please contact Mr. Michael E. Powell at (713) 877-3281.

Very truly yours,
