SUBJECT:
10CFR 20.302 Disposal Request For Sulfur 35 Dear Mr. Collins As your know, 10CFR 20.306 states that "Any licensee may dispose of the following licensed material without regard to its radioactivity:
(a) 0.05 microcuries or less,of hydrogen 3 or carbcq 14, per gram of medium, used for liquid scintillation counting.."
At the Fort St. Vrain Nuclear Generating Station we have identified sulfur 35 as a radioisotope of co'nce rn.
The salient features of sulfur 35 as compared to hydrogen 3 and carbon 14 are as follows, to wit:
Radioisotope E Beta (max), MeV Half Life Critical Oroan MPBB,pCi 3H 0.0186 12.3 y Body Tissue 1000 14C 0.156 5730 y Body Fat 300 35S 0.167 87 d Testis 90 In light of the fact that sulfur 35 exhibits similar characteristics to hydrogen 3 and carbon 14 and as such carries a small potential biological hazard, Public Service Company of Colorado hereby requests that pursuant to 10CFR 20.302, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approve this application to dispose of 0.05 microcuries or less of sulfur 35 per gram of medium, used for liquid scintillation counting, without regard to its radioactivity.
