Docket No. 50-482:
Additional Information Concerning Response to NRC Bulletin 88-04 Gentlemen of this letter is to provide additional information concerning The purpose Wolf Creek Nucleur Operating Corporation's (WCN00) response to NRC Bulletin 88-04,
" Potential Sefety Related Pump Loss'.
Reference 1 transmitted the results of the study performed at Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCG r. ) - for safety-related pumps except for-the pumps supplied by Ingers.oll-Rand.
Reference 2 tratesmit t ed the information--on the Ingersoll-Rand pumps.
3 provided corrections due to the information being intt'vertently Reference transposed.
In Reference 3.
WCNOC provided cerrections to minimum flow requirements for the Centrifugr.1 Charging Pumps (CCP).
- However, this transmittal overlooked an additional change to Item b. of Actions To Be Taken.
Item b, should read as follows:
Place a precaution in SYS-BG-120 and SYS-BG-201 to keep charging flow b.
above'175 gpm (which incluoes 60 gpm during recirculation) when a centrifugal charging pump is running.
In References 1-3, WCNOC had provided information indicating thtt a change--
to the low flow alarm via-the Total Plant Setpoint Document was necessary a meter i
for the CCPs.
In place of changing the low flow alarm setpoint, banding change was made adding a red arrow. at the CCP minimum flow requirement.
The bases for not changing the low: flow-alarm was the operational philosophy to run the Positive Displacement Pump (PDP) unless l

The PDP normal charging flow is less than the CCP low flow cavitation limit.
Therefore, a change to decrease the low flow alarm would create a nuisance alarm when the PDP is in operation.
Plant conditions may require running pumps at a flow below that recommended for continuous operation.
For these cases, additional evaluation of the occurrence is performed in accordance with plant procedures and may result in changes to the low flow requirements.
Documentation of the evaluations are availabic for review at the VCGS site.
If you have any questions concerning this matter, pierse contact me or Mr.
T. E. Cribbe of my staff.
Very truly yours.
