Vogtle Electric Generating Plant - Units 1 and 2, 50-424, 50-425 Control Level Electrical Penetration Protection Attention: Mr. James P. O'Reilly Gentlemen:

On December 19, 1983, Georgia Power Company reported a potentially reportable condition to the USNRC concerning control circuit electrical penetration protection.

Regulatory Guide 1.63 requires that electrical protection be pro-vided to limit the maximum short circuit current versus time conditions in such a manner that the electrical penetration assemblies can withstand these conditions without adversely affecting the integrity of the con-tainment pressure boundary. During a review by Bechtel Power Corporation, the architectural engineer for the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, of control level circuits connected to electrical penetration assemblies, twenty-two (22) non-safety related circuits per unit were found to have inadequate backup protection.

Six penetrations per unit are affected.

At this time, the architectural engineer is continuing an engineering evaluation to determine the potential effects of this condition on the safety of operation of the units. Georgia Power Company expects to inform the NRC of the results of this evaluation by March 30, 1984.

l This response contains no proprietary information and may be placed in the NRC Public Document Room upon receipt.
