Dear.Ms. Adensam:
This letter provides information concerning the control burn activities at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant which was. discussed recently with
.Ms. Miller and other representatives of your staff.
Approximately 600 acres of pine and mixed pine land on the VEGP plant site will be burned under control conditions during the months of January or February 1984. The purpose of this burn activity is to eliminate conditions which could lead to uncontrolled wild fires. The control burn activities will also enhance the productivity of the areas burned. Burning activities of these types are accepted land management practices. These activities are conducted during the winter months in order to minimize the damage to trees and to take' advantage of the wet sublayer existing in the pine and mixed ninc areas.
The portions of the site to be burned have-been prepared by developing fire breaks around the areas as noted on the attached map.
These fire breaks were developed by the Georgia State Forestry Commission during December 1983.
-The burn activities will be supervised by representatives of Georgia Power
. Company and the State of Georgia Forestry Commission. Only certain areas will
.be burned at a time and the activity will be coordinated with expected traffic
.due to site construction activities. The burning activities will be conducted
.during periods of low but steady wind to minimize the risk of the control burn becoming " uncontrolled."
As noted on the attached map, the areas to be burned are far removed from plant facilities. These same areas will be burned periodically throughout the life of the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant. Any future burn activity will be conducted by representatives of the Georgia Power Company Land p{

The. plant supervision will be notified before any burn activity.is initiated.
Burning activity will not require the participation of the plant fire brigade, however they will be notified prior to initiation of a burn.
As noted in discusst.ons with Ms. Miller, the VEGP-OLSER will be amended to reflect land management techniques to be utilized during the life of the LVogtle Electric Generating Plant.
If you have any further questions or need additional information, please contact Willard L. Bowers at (205) 870-6945.
Yours truly sl
