The environmental pressures on other generation methods coupled with increased public acceptance of nuclear plant designs featuring greater rellence on passive, or
- natural, safety mechanises could lead to a resurgence in the nuclear power industry.
A selection of HRC certlfled nuclear plant designs will be when additional nuclear capacity is considered.
One necessary possible design is the PlVS nuclear reactor of fered by ABB Atom, a merger of ASCA and Brown Beveri companies.
Representatives of ABB Atom presented this innovative design tc our nuclear personnel and we believe it merits consideration when selecting aeditional nuclear capacity.
I understand that ABB Atom will submit their PlUS design to the NRC for a preliminary safety information document review.
We urge your consideration of this design for certification.

l It is our understanding that All Atom will request, in July, that the NRC undertake the review of the ABB P!US Preliminary Safety Infonnation Document.
Duke Power Company has, for many years, monitored the development of the advanced reactor concepts that are likely to assist us in
.I-meeting future electricity demand. We have followed the ABB P!US System as part of that effort. We are encouraged to hear of your pending submittal to NRC and hope that your design receives an expeditious and thorough regulatory review.
It.is important to us that we have a selection of advanced reactor concepts available in the appropriate timeframe relative to our needs. The NRC is currently reviewing several competing concepts and the ABB P!US design would be a welcome competitor, at this time.
Please advise if we can be of assistance to you as you proceed through this process.
