_The purpose of,this letter is to inform NRC of TVA's intention to perform the RPV shell welds. examination as stated in the! reference.
Unfts 1 and-3 are-in-an extended outage. TVA will take advantage of the
- downtime to perform.the examinations from the inner diameter (1.D.)
utilizing automated ultrasonic' testing techniques on BFN Units 1 and 3 ptior.to starttip of the respective units..BFN Unit 2 examinations will
. be performed prior to th.s end-.of.the. cycle six refueling outage.
-The automated examinations for Units 1 and 3 vill be used in lieu of the

outer diameter (0.D.) examinations' scheduled for thic outage to satisfy the ASME Section XI code requirements'as modiffwt by request'for relief-

ISI-2. :In the event ASME Appendix d become: a requirement for operating units, TVA v:'.11 use and take credit for these examinations as satisfying the Appendi 8 requirements for EFN Units 1, 2, and 3.
TVA's' initial assessment indicates that approximately 90 percent of the
- reactor shell welds are accessible from the I.D. or 0.D.
