Honorable Kenneth M. Carr Chairman Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1717 H Street, N.W.

Washingten, D.C.

20555 Dcar Mr. Carra I

I am writing to request that the NRC provide me with an evaluation of the physical condition of the nuclear reactors and competence of the management and operating staff at the Calvert Cliffa and Peach Bottom nuclear power plants.

As you know, I have written to your agency in the past expressing my deep concerns about the operational safety violations at Calvert Cliffs and Peach Bottom which led to the NRC's decision to place the facilities on the " watch list" of nuclear plants requiring close monitoring and to the shutdown of i

the nuclear reactors.

Every precaution must be taken to ensure that nuclear power plants operate under the strictest of safety procedures. In this regard, I would appreciate an update and full

(

and thorough report on:

(

1) the operating history, current status and remaining useful life of the Peach Bottom and Calvert Cliffs reactors i

(including information on the violations cited and fines imposed against the operators since the plants began operations);

2) the changes in management and in staff training and procedures which have been instituted to correct operational l

safety problems identified by the NRC; 3) any remaining maintenance or operating problems at the two plants; i

4)

NRC's current program of inspections of the facilit es r

(including information on the frequency of inspections).

l Your attention to this matter is appreciated and I'look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

/*n n-Paul S. Sarbanes United States Senator
