Dear Mr. Stohr:

This letter is in response to your request November 4, 1994 for additional information concerning the condition of the 72 inch sewer line which runs under the corner of the office / laboratory building of the Neely Nuclear Research Center at Georgia Tech.

On December 21, 1994, Mr. Donald P. Alexander, Manager of Facilities, Engineering at Georgia Tech and I met with Mr. Lowell Chambers and Mr. Charles Brown. Mr. Chambers is Chief Engineer for the City of Atlanta. Mr. Brown works under Mr. Chambers.

Mr. Chambers informed us that (1) The seventy two inch sewer line which runs under the corner of the office building of NNRC was inspected by the City of Atlanta personnel on May 24, 1994. This sewer was evaluated "as being in overall very good condition" (see letter from Mr.  !

Chamber to me dated January 9, 1995). Also, the City l Inspection revealed that a minor leak coming from en 9" sanitary sewer crossing perpendicular and above the 72" sewer .

line exists. A work order to repair this leak was issued and I according to Mr. Chambers, this leak was repaired.

Confirmation of the repair, however is still pending.

1 (2) The sewer line that runs under th, Georgia Tech's baseball field and tennis courts and empties into the Orme Street trunk I has been repaired. No problems are anticipated in this line. I Another sewer line is being constructed parallel to the Orme 1

(3) l Street sewer line which receives drainage water from the east  !

side of the city. This additional line should decrease the load on the Orme Street line. ,

Director, Neely Nuclear Research Center Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta, Ga. 30332-0425 Re: Condition of 72" Storm Sewer under Neely Nuclear Research Center

Dear Hr. Karam,

As per your recent request, please allow this letter to serve as confirmation of the condition of a 72" RCP storm sewer running from west to east under a portion of a the Neely Nuclear Research Center on the Ga. Tech campus. This sewer also runs under the Ga. Tech Police Station and the Plant Operations Building. It terminates with its confluence with the Orne Street Combined Sewer Trunk south t

of Tenth Street.

This sewer was not constructed by the City of Atlanta. It is considered to be a " private" sewer and is not part of the " City system". Consequently, our records are limited. By inspection we know that the majority of the 2035 f eet of sewer between the Police Station and the Orme Street Trunk is constructed of pre-cast RCP (reinforced concrete pipe). Two short sections, 103 feet under State Street and 83 feet under Atlantic Drive, are constructed of granite blocks. We assume that the granite portions were constructed with the original streets where they crossed a natural drainage area. Incidental information suggests that the RCp portions were constructed in the late 1960's by a private contractor under contract to the university.

The most recent inspection of this sewer by City of Atlanta personnel was May 24, 1994. This inspection was a routine internal

" walk-thru". At that time the sewer was evaluated as being in overall "very good condition". The inspection revealed no cause for concern, however a minor leak was identified in the granite section under State Street. A work order was issued f or the repair l of the 8" sanitary sewer crossing perpendicular at this point.
