Mr. Michaels:
This is to confirm our phone conversation this morning concerning an interpretation of our facility operating license.
The specific section (B(3)) of the license concerns the use of
"...but not to separate such byproduct material at the facility:
byproduct material as may be produced by operation of the j
reactor".
l This should be read as no separation of materials contained within the fuel elements themselves and does not pertain to byproduct' material generated at the facility or transferred to l'
the license.
l All experiments at the Nuclear Science Center are subject to a standard review process by the staff or'the Reactor. Safety Board l
prior to approval.
Any experiment that may involve significant hs::ards or an unreviewed safety question would have a formal l'
safety analysis performed prior to its implementation.
