UNIT 2 DOCKET N0. 50 446 THIMBLE TUBE THINNING IN WESTINGHOUSE REACTORS REF:

TU Electric Letter logged TXX-89781, from William J. Cahill, Jr.

to the NRC. dated November 2, 1989.

Gentlemen:

The NRC Bulletin 88-09 " Thimble Tube Thinning in Westinghouse Reactors."

discusses thimble tube wear resulting from flow-induced vibration for Westinghouse reactors with bottom mounted instrumentation. As a result of this bulletin, TU Electric established an inspection program to monitor thimble tube performance. Thimble tube inspections were completed at CPSES Unit 2 on October 18. 1994. This letter reports the results of the inspection as described in the referenced correspondence.

Each of the S8 thimble tubes was subjected to a multi frequency eddy current examination over its entire length.

Five tubes exhibited detectable wear.

The thimble tube at core location K-02 had an indicated thru-wall wear at 21*:

the tube at core location E-09 had indicated thru-wall wear of 24*: the tube at core location P-09 had an indicated thru wall wear of 22%. the tube at location H 11 had an indicated thru-wall wear of 33*: and the tube at core location H 15 had an indicated thru-wall wear of 68%.

All indications were evaluated and determined to be acceptable for continued service in accordance with site approved procedures; however, tube H 15 will be taken out of service as its predicted wear is close to the acceptance criteria. Each thimble tube will be re-examined at its next periodic inspection interval.
