Oregon State University TRIGA Reactor (OSTR), Docket N/ ef No. 50-243, License No. R-106 In accordance with section 6.7.e of the OSTR Technical Specifications, we are hereby submitting the Annual Report of the Oregon State University M ^ "4 Radiation Center and TRIGA Reactor for the period July 1,1993 through UNIVI:fon Y June 30,1994. Please note that we are also using this letter of transmittal to send copies of the current report to Mr. Al Adams, OSTR Senior Project Manager, USNRC, Washington, DC; and to the USNRC's Region IV office.

n uii.n..,n i au n u oo The 1993-94 annual report continues the pattern established over the past n,n aun, oinom few years and includes information about the entire Radiation Center rather e m m" than concentrating primarily on the reactor. Because the report addresses a number of different interests, it is rather lengthy, but we have incorporated a short executive summary which highlights the Center's activities and accomplishments over the past year.

As a brief introduction to the current annual report, I am pleased to note that the Radiation Center experienced another busy and successful year. Reactor use continued to increase with OSU research up 18% and off-campus research up almost 150%. Increased efficiency meant that the time when two and three customers were using the reactor at the same time increased by 140% and 80% respectively.

Other indications of a successful year include a 245% jump in the time the Gammacell irradiator was in use; an increase in off-site shipments of radioactive material by 75%, and a 39% rise in publications arising from use of the Radiation Center f acilities.

I

,g,,, Apart from the numbers, in the past year the Radiation Center was u, n , successfully involved in helping to restore the generic exemption from j annual fees for non-profit educational institutions, implementing the revised i y, ,,,

10 CFR 20 regulations, preparing the analysis for refueling the reactor with low-enriched uranium fuel, and contributing towards the successful shakedown testing of the APEX facility.
