Gentlemen:
As counsel for Suffolk County in the licensing proceeding for the Shoreham Nuclear Power Station, we were served on September 19, 1983 a copy of a transcript of the Commission's public meeting of September 12, 1983,.concerning the " Status of NTOL Plants."
We respectfully wish to bring to your attention a factual error by the Staff in their discussion of the problems with the emergency diesel generators at Shoreham.
Messrs. Eisenhut and Novak identified the Shoreham diesel generators as "V-16 diesels," and it was suggested that such large size diesels may not be operating in any domestic nuclear plants.
In fact, each of the diesels at Shoreham is an engine model DSR-4-8 manufactured by Trans-america Delaval, Inc., with 8 cylinders in an "in-line" configuration.
This fact and other pertinent information, including identification of Transamerica Delaval diesels at other nuclear facilities, are set forth in IE Information Notice No.~83-58: Transamerica Delaval Diesel Generator Crankshaft Failure, SSINS No. 6835, dated August 30, 1983.
