Mr. James P. O'Reilly Gentlemen:
On August 17, 1983, Georgia Power Company reported a potential deficiency to the NRC concerning gate valve position indication.
Westinghouse reported to Georgia Power Company that certain gate valves could possibly indicate " closed" prior to the valve disc fully isolating flow.
This could give the operator an inaccurate indication of true valve position.
Westinghouse further stated that depending on the valve application and consequences of inaccurate closure indication, the wiring of certain valves may need to be altered to meet operational safety requirements.
Westinghouse also supplied a methodology to be used for corrective action.
At this time, a review is underway to determine if gabe vihres supplied by Westinghouse are susceptible to this problem.
The design of the wiring systems of Westinghouse and other valve vendors are being reviewed to ensure that this is not a generic problem.
Georgia Power Company expects this review to be completed in late October and also expects to submit a final report to the l
NRC by November 4, 1983.
