On August 13, 1983, in accordance with 10CFR50.55 (e) , we reported verbally to Region 1 a potential deficiency concerning the failure of the crankshaft in the Shoreham Emergency Standby Diesel Generator 102.

Description of the Deficiency The first indication of crankshaft tailure occurred during re-testing of Diesel Generator 102 (1R43*G-102) atter changing the cylirder heads, when a shutdown of the engine was necessitated by the determination that abnormal vibration levels were being en-countered. The shutdown occurred 15 minutes prior to the scheduled completion of the test. After engine cool-down, cover plates were removed to facilitate inspection and it was discovered that the crankshaft had tailed in the vicinity at the connecting rod journal at the #7 cylinder.

As a result of this failure, inspections were performed on the crankshafts of Diesel Generators 101 and 103 (lR43*G-101 &

1R43*G-103). Linear indications were found in the crankshafts of both remaining engines in the area of the drive pin journal re-entry fillet at the web. These indications appeared similar in nature and were noted at several locations on each crankshaft.

In view of the above, it has been determined that a reportable condition exists under 10CFR50.55 (e) 8309230384 830914 7 PDR ADOCK 05000322 S pop (g
