Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. 1 and No. 2 BV-1 Docket No. 50-334, License No. DPR-66 BV-2 Docket No. 50-412, License No. NPF-73 Request For Additional Information Regarding Generic Letter 93-04, " Rod Control System Failure and Withdrawal of Rod Cluster Control Assemblies,10 CFR 50.54 (f)"

(TAC Nos. N86831 and N86832)

By letters dated August 6 and September 20, 1993, Duquesne Light Company (DLC) responded to Generic Letter (GL) 93-04.

In the September 20, 1993

response, DLC discussed the possibility' of i

conducting a

current order timing modification and a new current order surveillance test at Beaver Valley Power Station Units No. 1 and No.

2 contingent upon satisfactory testing of the current order timing modification at another nuclear facility.

The modification was successfully tested at the R.

E.

Ginna Station on April 15, 1994.

By letter dated December 5,

1994, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requested that DLC commit to implementing a current order timing modification and a new current order surveillance test (to be done each refueling outage) as described in referenced Westinghouse documents prior to startup from the next refueling outage that begins later than three months from receipt of the Request for Additional Information (RAI),

or provide an alternate long-term plan and schedule.

The response was requested within 30 days of receipt of the RAI.

DLC will make the modifications detailed in Westinghouse Technical Bulletin NSD-TB-94-05-RO to the current order timing at Beaver Valley Unit No.

1 during.its tenth refueling outage and at Beaver Valley Unit No.

2 during its fifth refueling outage.

A new current order surveillance test, based on the NRC staff approved "WOG Recommended Rod Control System Surveillance Test," will be performed prior to entering Mode 2

at the end of each oatage.

The Beaver Valley Unit 1

Tenth Refueling Outage began on January 3, 1995, and the fifth refueling outage at Beaver Valley Unit 2 is currently scheduled to start on or about March 24, 1995.

We will inform the staff in writing after we have completed the above modifications and surveillance tests.
