Thomas, Chief Standardization and Special Projects Branch Re: Docket No. 50-396 License No. R-123

Dear Mr. Thomas:

This is in reference to our letter of May 10, 1983 requesting a change to the CAVALIER Technical Specifications.

We would like to add the following sentence to Section 5.1 on the specifications of the reactor fuel.

An experimental element in which individual fuel plates can be removed or inserted may also be used.

The following additional information is also being supplied at the request of Mr. R.E. Carter of your office concerning Section 3.2.B. of the Technical Specifications.

The present core configuration on the CAVALIER is a 4 x 4 array of fuel with the control rods at the four corners.

The control rods are worth approximately 0.75% Ak/k each in this configuration. The shutdown margin with one rod withdrawn is 1.53% Ak/k and the excess reactivity is 0.60% Ak/k.

Sincerely, h

J.P. Farrar, Reactor Supervisor UVA, Reactor Facility JPF:vs
