September 6, 1983 Docket Nos. 50-348 50-364 Director, Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.

Alabama Power Company is a member of the Nuclear Utility Task l
Action Committee (NUTAC) formed on September 1,1983 for the specific purpose of defining the provisions of an appropriate program for l
ensurir.g that adequate equipment information is determined. The NUTAC l
effort to describe such program provisions is currently scheduled for completion in February,1984.
Alabama Power Company will utilize this information to evaluate its present program in order to ensure that a comprehensive Farley Nuclear Plant system is available to obtain appropriate information for safety related equipment, assure adequate evaluation, and implement appropriate recommendations in accordance with plant procedures and instructions.

4 Mr. S. A. Varga September 6, 1983 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page 2 While the NUTAC efforts are specifically oriented to Section 2.2.2, the Generic Letter states that "the program shall be closely coupled with action 2.2.1".
In addition, Section 3.2 requests that a compre-hensive post-maintenance testing program be defined for safety-related components (excluding the reactor trip system). Since the NUTAC efforts will define the provisions for obtaining information related to safety related equipment (e.g., operating experience and maintenance problems),
it is apparent that a comprehensive program addressing Section 3.2 should also reflect the NUTAC efforts. Alabama Power Company, there-fore, asks for extension in responding to Sections 2.2 and 3.2 of the Generic Letter 83-28 until 90 days after receipt of the NUTAC information.
In view of Alabama Power Company's continuing participation in the SEE-IN and NPRDS programs, it is believed that this time extension will have no immediate impact on the public health and safety.
In concert with our efforts in the NUTAC, Alabama Power Company is evaluating our existing capability of conforming with Section 2.2 and 3.2 provisions.
It is also noted that Alabama Power Company fully intends to address each of the highest priority items outlined by the Generic Letter within the requested timeframe.
