s ENCLOSUREI REPLY TO APPENDIX A OF NRC INSPECTION REPORT NO. 50-317/83-08; 50-318/83-08 ITEM A The purpose of requiring that the Supervisor-Plant Chemistry be contacted for guidance if chemical yields are less than 50% provided a method of validating the laboratory analysis performed on Strontium.
Based on the performance of previous in-house laboratory techniques, a decision has been made to contract an approved outside laboratory to perform future Strontium analyses.
Since future analyses will be performed by an independent laboratory, the need to validate in-house analysis is (Q longer necessary. However, should we decide to conduct this analysis in-house at sorW time in the future, we recopize the need to revise RCP l-1006 to ensure that analyses are reviewed by Supervisor-Plant Chemistry prior to reporting final results.
ITEM B Approved alternative sampling geometries, other than the glass vial are addressed by RCP l-502, Sampling of Gases for activity.
The procedure does not, however, delineating step-by-step instructions for sampling using these other geometries. This procedure will be revised to specify all the approved and recommended sampling methods and the required sequential steps. Until the appropriate procedure modifications are approved, only the gas vial will be used for waste gas decay tank analysis.
