20555 License No. DPR-35 Docket No. 50-293
Subject:
Response to Request for Additional Information on 10CFR50, Appendix
'R Submittal
Dear Sir:
In a telephone conversation on May 13, 1983, Mr. K.T. Eccleston of your office requested additional information to support our 10CFR50, Appendix R submittal that was transmitted by letter from Mr. A.V. Morisi, BECo, to yourself, dated June'25, 1982 (BECo Letter No.82-180).
In particular, Mr. Eccleston requested a complete list of all fuses that are planned to be removed should a fire occur in any of the fire zones at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.
These fuses would be-removed during certain fires to prevent spurious operation of plant components due to the effect of the fire on their control cables. A list of all fuses planned to be removed for fires at Pilgrim is provided as Attachment A.
It should be noted that fuses will be removed only for a fire in either the cable spreading room (Fire Zone 3.2) or the control room (Fire Zone 3.1).
The'information presented in Attachment A represents a change from that provided in our Appendix R submittal of June.25,1982. ' The appropriate revisions to the recommended procedures in Section 3 of the Appendix R submittal will be made l
upon NRC approval and subsequent implementation by Boston Edison. The appropriate revisions to the implemented procedures in Section 7 of the Appendix R submittal
.will be made by September 30, 1983.
In addition to the information provided in Attachment A, Mr. Eccleston requested l
photographs to show the accessibility and identification of the fuses to be removed. Because all of the fuse installations listed in Attachment A are identi-
- cal, the -requested photographs are provided in Attachment B for one typical fuse installation.
Depending on the particular_ fuse-application, some fuses in trip circuits have been replaced with. solid links to ensure the trip function (see Attachment B, Photo #2).- When directed to remove trip fuses, these solid links would be treated l
~ in the same manner as trip fuses.
