The staff of the University of Virginia (UVa) Research Reactor Facility (Docket Nos. 50-62 and 50-396) are currently reviewing your staff's comments from their review of our Emergency Plan. Many of the areas for which additional information or changes in the existing plan have been requested are easily addressed. However, it appears that several of these areas will require a major rework or additions to the existing plan.
As you are probably aware, as a result of a recent reportable occurrence, we are currently. involved in rewriting, reviewing and approving several sections of our Standard Operating Procedures to improve reactor operations of our 2 MW Research Reactor. We are also in the middle of our Reactor Operator Training Program. We have begun to revise our Emergency Plan in response to your review comments. However, we feel that we could do a more thorough rework given a longer response l period.
l Thus, I request a 60 day extension to the 30 day deadline for our' l response to the UVA Emergency Plan Review. Thank you for your prompt consideration of this matter.
