Duane Arnold Energy Center Docket No. 50-331 Op. License DPR-49 Prompt Notification of a Reportable Occurrence File: A-118a, TE-2
Dear Mr. Keppler:
This letter, telecopied to your office, provides prompt notification of a Reportable Occurrence in accordance with Specification 6.ll.2.a.(9) of the Duane Arnold Energy Center Appendix A Technical Specifications.
Specifically, engineering calculations performed following a piping walkdown has identified a 3/4" HLE pipe that exceeds design basis code allowable pipe stress.
Calculations show that the maximurn stress under design basis conditions which could be applied to the pipe would not have exceeded the ultimate strength of the material.
The piping in question is a vent line that is attached to the full flow test return line for the RHR system. The RHR return line stresses have been reviewed and found to be acceptable.
We have initiated prompt engineering corrective action to restore the 1
code design margin. A design change will be promptly implemented to return the line to within design basis code allowables conditions.
In addition, a full investigation has been initiated into the circumstances surrounding this event. We will keep both the DAEC NRC Resident Inspector and your office informed as these activities progress.
