Keppler Regional Administrator Gentlemen:
RE:
WM. H. ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 10CFR50.55 (e), ITEM M-46, FAILURE OF ESSENTIAL HVAC TURNING VANES W.O.
57300, JOB E-5590, FILE NO. 956C, M-46 This letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject condition reported to the Commission as a reportable deficiency under the requirements of 10CFR50.55 (e) and provides the status of the actions being taken to resolve the deficiency.
Based on a telephone conversation between W.F. Forney(NRC) and D.J. S tephenson (CG&E), it was agreed that an extension would be granted for the submittal of this report from August 31, 1983 to September 9, 1983.
Our previous interim report, LOZ-83-0023, dated April 29, 1983, indicated that a test procedure to verify the design adequacy of the turning vanes in essential HVAC systems was being reviewed for approval.
Concurrently, modification of turning vanes in selected systems, particularly those having ALARA implications, is under further evaluation.
Corrective actions planned to resolve the reported deficiency include:
I 1.
Modification of the essential turning vanes in the Reactor Building Ventilation System (VR),
and other selected systems; 2.
Air test and balance of all systems, and completion of the verification test.
3.
Correction of any deficiencies discovered during the test.
