Subject:

Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(c) Item on Equipment Supported from Block Walls (#84)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This interim report on the problem of supporting equipment from block walls has been prepared to provide the current status of this problem.

This item was originally reported to Mr. H. Wescott's office of NRC Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. D. Ferencz, Acting Supervisor -

Construction Quality Assurance, on December 13, 1982.

At that time, it was discovered that portions of the security system (control panels, card readers, pull boxes, and 4" rigid conduit) had been installed on block walls. In addition, the fire detection devices had been mounted to the same walls.

Such installations conflict with Edison's response to NRC Bulletin 80-11 (Edison letter EF2-52,623 from H. Tauber). This response stated, in part, that piping and equipment shall not be supported on block walls. Where items were on the walls, they either weighed less than 2% of the wall weight, or had been included in the design calcu-lations.

The Detroit Edison Architectural / Civil Group is conducting a final analysis of block walls which shall account for all loads attached to the walls. The results of, and the. response to, the analysis will be used to close the 50.55(e) open item.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, will be cent when further information is available. If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. G. M. Trahey, Assistant Director - Project Quality Assurance.
