Dear Mr. Youngblood:

This is in response to your May 3 letter regarding the construction of the Braidwood Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2. Reed Township, Will County, Illinois. To facilitate compliance with Section 7(c) of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, Federal Agencies are required to obtain from the Fish and Wildlife Service information concerning any species, listed or proposed to be listed, which may be present in the area of a proposed action.

Therefore, we are furnishing you the following list of species which may be present in the concerned area:

Classification Common Name Scientific Name Habitat Endangered Indiana bat Myotis sodalis riparian forest (foraging &

summer roosts)

Endangered Bald eagle Haliaeetus leucocephalus riparian forest (wintering feeding perches

& roosts)

There is no designated critical habitat in the project area at this time.

The Indiana bat utilizes stream corridors such as the Kankakee river for foraging in the summertime. They roost during the daytime under the loose bark or in cavities of trees.

In general, they prefer streams with mature-riparian trees greater than 16 inches in diameter on both banks.

The bald eagle may be found in Will County during the winter feeding in open I

(ice-free) areas of rivers like the Kankakee. They perch in mature streamside trees to feed. They will roost together at night in secluded, wooded ravines near the river.
