20555 ULNRC-24 4 7 Gentlement DOCKET NUMBER 50-403 CALLAWAY PLANT FAILURE OF WESTINGilOUSE STEAM GENERATOR TUBE MECHANICAL PLUGS Referenco: HRC Bulletin No. 89-01, Supplomont 2, dated June 28, 1991 HRC Bulletin No. 89-01, Supplomont 2, Action Item 1 requested Licensons to verify that information contained in Tablo 2 of Reference 4 for plugs fabricated from group 2 heats is correct.
The information contained in Tablo 2 of Referenco 4 is correct for Callaway Plant regarding the number of plugs installed in the hot-log and cold-leg side of each steam generator, their heat numbers, and datos of installation.
The plug operating temperaturo, however, should be revis9d to 618.4 degrees F for the HL and 588.4 degroos F for the CL plugs.
Action item 2a through 2f will be addressed as follows:
Union Electric will remove all of the subject hot-leg plugs at the next refueling outage in the Spring, 1992.
The cold-log plugs will not be removed, as their romaining predicted lifetimes are sufficient for them to remain installed for the life of the plant.
Plugs fabri-cated from Inconel 600 will not be installed in the future.
Maintaining personnel exposure ALARA will be a high priority for the tubo plug removal work to be performed.
If there are any questions concerning this matter, pleano contact me.
Very truly yours,
