Mr. S. A. Varga Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Units 1 and 2 Automatic Shunt Trip of Reactor Trip Breakers, DS-416 Gentlemen:
In letters dated May 10, May 31, and June 30, 1983, Alabama Power Company committed to install an automatic shunt trip for the main reactor trip breakers and provided design information regarding this change for NRC review.
The NRC required that the proposed design change not be installed until NRC approval of the design.
Subsequently, Alabama Power Company informed the NRC that approval of the design was needed by August 1,1983, to support the preparation of design change documents in accordance with existing administrative procedures for the upcoming Unit 2 refueling outage.
To date, NRC approval and/or comments regarding the proposed design have not been received.
Alabama Power Company considers the timely installation of the automatic shunt trip feature to be a high priority item.
Installation during the upcoming Unit 2 refueling outage scheduled for September 1983 would be prudent since the next scheduled Unit 2 cutage is February 1985.
Therefore, due'to the importance of installing the shunt trip design -in a timely manner and the lack of NRC objection to the submitted design, Alabama Power Company intends to proceed with the installation of the shunt trip feature during the upcoming Unit 2 refueling outage.
Any subsequent design. changes resulting from NRC review could be made during the 3rd refueling outage scheduled for February 1985.
This work will be~ performed in accordance with the provisions of-10CFR50.59 unless NRC approval is~ received - prior 'to the September 1983 refueling outage.
